Cairo families lose more hours to the commute than to anything that happens in a classroom, and a posting here is often temporary. Parents weighing the best online schools in Cairo usually switch for five reasons.
A Cairo school run can take more out of a child's day than the lessons put back, and the return leg lands in the evening traffic. Online, those hours stay with the family, and there is no bus fee, no driver and no waiting at a school gate.
Cairo holds a large diplomatic, development and corporate population whose assignments run in two and three year cycles. The enrolment belongs to the child rather than to an address in Egypt, so the curriculum, teachers and records continue into the next country without a new admission.
Admission here does not depend on a seat opening at a licensed international school in Maadi or New Cairo. A counsellor maps what the child has already covered, places them in the right grade and starts them, which matters when a move and the school year have not lined up.
The pathway is picked for the country after Egypt rather than the one the family is sitting in. Cambridge, American, Australian, CBSE-aligned, NIOS and BOSSE run from one school, so a child heading to the UK, the US or India is not studying for the wrong destination.
The school day takes one batch slot and finishes around the middle of the day in Egyptian time, which leaves the afternoon for Arabic lessons, sport, music or simply a child who is not exhausted by travel.

Straight answers for families in Cairo: how Egypt's compulsory education law applies, which curricula are offered and which are not, what the class times mean in Egyptian hours, and how examinations need to be planned.
Egypt makes education compulsory for twelve years, six primary, three preparatory and three secondary, and the enrolment duty in the Education Law is written for parents of Egyptian children, enforced locally by governors. Home education is not recognised as a route, and the manazel option sits inside the national system with eligibility set by the Ministry. Sunbeam World School is not registered with the Egyptian Ministry of Education. The position of a foreign child resident in Egypt is not settled, so confirm yours with your local educational administration before enrolling.
Cairo runs on postings. Embassies, development agencies, energy and construction firms rotate staff through the city on two and three year cycles, and this is built for those households, where the next country decides the curriculum and the child may never sit an Egyptian examination. It also fits a family that arrived in February and found the licensed schools full. A family raising a child to finish school in Egypt is in the wrong place here.
Cairo sits three and a half hours behind the published India timetable in winter and two and a half in summer, so the clock change in spring and autumn moves your child's school day by an hour. Nursery through Grade 9 land at roughly 10:00 to 12:30 Cairo time in winter. Grades 10 to 12 begin at about 06:30 in winter and 07:30 in summer, which is earlier than most Cairo schools start, so a senior student needs a household that can manage that.
Cairo is where an online education meets a room with an invigilator, and that room has to be arranged. A student not attending a local school enters as a private candidate, which is a different process from a school entering its own pupils, and places are finite. Start this before the course begins rather than in the term the series runs, and ask specifically how any subject with a practical or oral component would be handled, because those are the ones that narrow a child's choices.
Cairo's licensed schools between them run the IB, Edexcel, the American diploma and the Egyptian national certificate, so families here compare more boards than in most cities. What is offered as an international online school for families in Egypt is six pathways: Cambridge, American, Australian, CBSE-aligned, NIOS and BOSSE. The IB, Edexcel, ICSE and the Egyptian certificate are not among them, and a family set on one of those is better served by a campus here.
A Cambridge international online school in Cairo gives a child the same syllabus a licensed campus here teaches, without a place being tied to a vacancy or a compound. Students take Cambridge IGCSE in Grades 6 to 10 and AS and A Levels in Grades 11 and 12 with Cambridge certified teachers. The qualification travels, which is the point for a household that may be in Nairobi or Amman by the time the child reaches Grade 11.
Mid-course arrivals are the hardest cases for any school and the commonest in a posting city. A counsellor takes the Cairo school's reports, works out which subjects were started and how far each one went, and confirms in writing which can be carried on before anybody pays anything. Where a subject cannot be continued, you are told that at the counselling stage rather than in the second term.
A Levels run in Grades 11 and 12 on the Cambridge pathway, and for a Cairo family two practical questions come with them. The classes sit early in the Egyptian morning, and the examination entry has to be arranged as a private candidate well ahead. Settle both at the counselling call alongside the subject combination, because together they decide whether the two years will actually work for your child.
The syllabus is the same; what differs is who carries the logistics. A licensed Cairo school enters its own pupils for examinations, runs laboratories and provides a bus, and charges for all of it. A British curriculum online school in Cairo removes the commute and the joining fee and hands you the examination arrangements to organise. Families who want the school to handle everything should choose a campus, and we will tell them so.
The answer turns entirely on where the family goes next. The pathway follows US K-12 Common Core standards under Cognia accreditation and is assessed continuously, which suits a child heading to an American system and suits a child heading to a British one much less. Before choosing it, ask precisely what paperwork arrives at the end of Grade 12 and put that question to the district or school your family expects to join.
Cairo has no Indian-curriculum campus, which is why families posted here usually face a change of board on arrival and another on return. An Indian curriculum online school in Cairo removes both: NCERT textbooks and CBSE-pattern assessment from Grade 1 to 12, with NIOS or BOSSE certifying Grades 10 and 12. Registration and examination arrangements from Egypt are settled with a counsellor, and the fees for those are separate.
They travel, and the next school decides what it does with them. What leaves here is a transfer certificate, marksheets for the grades completed and the board registration records, backed by IAO and Cognia accreditation. What happens next is out of our hands: some schools place on paperwork, some test, and a few will not take a mid-year entrant at all. Ask the schools on your shortlist before the move is booked.
Twenty, with two teachers. The fee structure page publishes a 2:20 ratio, a class teacher taking the lesson and an assistant subject teacher dealing with questions as they come. For a child who has just landed in Cairo and knows nobody, the thing worth watching in a demo class is not the number but whether the teacher notices a student who has gone quiet.
One published figure per grade covers the live classes, the learning material, the assessments, the platform with its recordings and notes, and the co-curricular sessions, with nothing added for technology during the year. From Egypt, four things sit outside it: the one-time board registration fee, NIOS registration and examination fees as an international student, attestation on the Australian pathway, and courier charges on any physical books sent out. Fees are stated as non-refundable.
Arabic is not taught here, and in Cairo that matters less than it would elsewhere, because the city itself teaches it faster than any timetable. The school day ends around the middle of the day, which leaves the afternoon for a tutor, a neighbourhood class or simply playing outside in it. Ask the counsellor which languages your child's pathway does offer before assuming Arabic is one of them.
Less than most families expect. A laptop, tablet or smartphone and a stable connection, with headphones and a webcam recommended rather than required, and nothing to buy beyond a browser and a PDF reader. For admission, an identity document or birth certificate and the last school reports are what a counsellor places the child on. No Egyptian residence paperwork or school licence is involved, because the enrolment does not pass through any Egyptian authority.

It holds IAO and Cognia accreditation, with Cambridge certifying the IGCSE and A Level pathway and NIOS or BOSSE certifying the Indian pathways. None of that is an Egyptian licence. Cairo parents are used to checking whether a school is licensed by the Ministry here, and the honest answer is that this one is not and is not trying to be, so judge it on the international credentials and verify each on the issuing body's own site.
They do not, and for nursery it matters little either way. Egyptian compulsory education starts at six; nursery here starts at three and runs on short activity-led sessions with an adult nearby for the first weeks. A family that arrives in Cairo in November can start a three-year-old in November instead of waiting for next September.
Teaching is in English throughout, so a seven-year-old who lands in Maadi in October is not sitting in lessons they cannot follow while the language catches up. Live periods are short at this stage with breaks between them, and a good share of the work is reading, worksheets and projects away from the screen. Arabic comes from the street and a local tutor rather than from us.
That is what it is built for, through Cambridge A Levels, the Cognia-accredited American pathway or the Indian pathways, with university pathway support for applications. Two Cairo-specific things need settling first: the senior-grade classes start early in Egyptian time, and examination entry as a private candidate takes arranging. Neither is a reason not to enrol, but both are reasons to plan in Grade 9 rather than Grade 11.
Enrolling after the term has started is normal here, because postings do not begin in September. The counsellor works from the previous school's reports to place the child and lists what has been missed, and the recordings cover lessons taught before the join date. A child who arrives in Cairo in January is in class that month rather than waiting out the year.
Live, every timetabled period, with a subject teacher present. The recording is there afterwards for revision or for a day the child was away. That distinction matters in Cairo, where many households have both parents out at work by eight: a live class with tracked attendance supervises itself in a way a library of videos does not.
One batch slot, with the exact length for your child's grade published before you enrol. Set against a Cairo school day plus the journey at either end, it returns a substantial part of the day to the family. Younger grades sit shorter periods with breaks, work happens away from the screen, eye exercises are done during class and the school issues blue-light guidance.
A laptop, tablet or smartphone and a connection that holds, with headphones and a webcam recommended rather than required. No speed figure in Mbps is published and no specialist machine is needed, since only a browser and a PDF reader are involved. If a class is lost to a power or connection problem, the recording covers it.
Through the same twenty classmates every day online, and through Cairo in the afternoons. Expat life here runs on clubs, compounds and sports grounds, and a school day that finishes at midday leaves far more room for that than a campus day ending at four. Online clubs, competitions and group projects run across a student body in 135+ countries alongside.
SEND trained educators work to an individualised plan agreed with the family, covering dyslexia, ADHD, autism and speech, language and sensory processing needs, and it is priced separately from the annual fee. For a family that has moved country, the useful part is that existing assessments are read and used rather than discarded, so a report done before the posting still counts.
The class teacher first, then the academic coordinator, and a counsellor beyond that. What the school does not have is clinical psychologists, and it does not list any, so a child who needs clinical support should have it arranged in Cairo alongside school. Being straight about that line is more use to a family than a vague promise of pastoral care.
On a parent app and portal that updates as work is marked, which suits a household where one parent is in traffic at the hour the school day ends. Attendance, assignments and assessment results appear as they are recorded, and a teacher with a concern raises it directly rather than saving it for a termly meeting.
The school runs its own published calendar, which will not line up with the Egyptian one. A national holiday here may be a teaching day, and the school may break when Cairo schools are open. Families take the days they want as planned absences, tell the teacher beforehand and use the recordings, which is also how most handle Ramadan and Eid.
Parents do no teaching at any stage. For Grades 1 to 5 the requirements ask that an adult be available to help with logins and keep a young child on task, and in Cairo that is often a grandparent or household help rather than a parent, which is fine. From the middle grades the student runs the timetable and the adult role becomes reading the dashboard.
Four things, in this order: where the family goes after Egypt, which pathway that points to, what the class times look like in Cairo hours, and how examination entry will be arranged. The published fee for the grade comes with it, a demo class can be booked in the same call, and nothing is charged until you decide.
