Denmark lets families teach at home, which few countries in Europe do, and that makes an international curriculum a real option here. Parents weighing the best online schools in Denmark usually switch for five reasons.
Denmark requires that children be taught rather than that they attend a school, which is why home education is lawful here and not in several neighbouring countries. A family notifies its municipality and is supervised, and an online school can be the teaching part of that arrangement.
International school places in Denmark cluster around a handful of cities, which leaves families elsewhere choosing between a local school in Danish and a long commute. Online, the Cambridge, American and Australian pathways open to a household in any municipality.
Households that arrive in Denmark for a posting often leave for another one. The enrolment belongs to the child rather than to a Danish address, so the curriculum, teachers and records continue into the next country without a new admission round.
The afternoon batches land at roughly 09:00 to 11:30 Danish time, an ordinary school morning, and cover Nursery through Grade 9. The rest of the day stays free for Danish lessons, a club or a sport, which is where a child meets the neighbourhood.
The pathway is picked for the country after Denmark rather than the one the family is sitting in. Cambridge, American, Australian, CBSE-aligned, NIOS and BOSSE run from one school, so a child heading to the UK, the US or India is not studying for the wrong destination.

Straight answers for families anywhere in Denmark: how home education works under Danish law, what the municipality supervises, which curricula are offered, and what the class times mean locally.
Denmark is one of the few European countries where it is. The constitution allows parents to teach children themselves provided the teaching measures up to what public schools generally require, and the detail sits in the private schools act. Practically: a written notification to the municipality before teaching starts, then supervision. An online school can be the teaching half of that arrangement, but it cannot be the arrangement itself, and it cannot notify on your behalf.
Each municipality sets its own rhythm, so one family is seen annually and another twice a year. A visit generally means showing a log of what has been taught, samples of the child's work and a plan for the period ahead. Testing in the minimum subjects is possible, covering Danish, mathematics, English, history and social studies and the sciences. A poor assessment brings a retest after three months, and enrolment in a school can follow.
It covers most of them and not the ones that matter most locally. Mathematics, English, the sciences and the humanities are taught to international standards. Danish is not taught at all, and the curriculum is not written against Danish learning goals, which is precisely where a supervision visit concentrates. Families in this position cover Danish and the national content separately, and the time to arrange that is before notifying.
Two groups mainly. Internationally mobile households whose next country decides the curriculum, and families living outside Aarhus, Odense and the capital where international places are thin on the ground and the alternative is a long daily journey. It also suits a child returning to India. It does not suit a family settling permanently and wanting Danish certification.
The usable window is the afternoon India batch, which lands at roughly 09:00 to 11:30 in Denmark during winter and an hour later in summer, covering Nursery through Grade 9. Grades 10 to 12 exist only on the morning India slot, which translates to about 05:30 here. That is the single biggest practical limitation on this page and it affects every municipality equally.
Cambridge, American, Australian, CBSE-aligned, NIOS and BOSSE, and the same six wherever you live, which is the difference from the physical market where choice depends on your postcode. The International Baccalaureate, Edexcel, ICSE and the folkeskole curriculum are not offered. A family set on the IB will find it in the larger cities rather than here.
Cambridge IGCSE runs in Grades 6 to 10 and AS and A Levels in Grades 11 and 12, available from any municipality rather than only where a Cambridge school happens to exist. That geography is the point: a family in a smaller town gets the same syllabus and the same certified teachers as one in the capital, without moving house or putting a child on a long daily journey.
Generally yes, and the earlier the counsellor sees the paperwork the better. Placement works from the previous school's reports, subject by subject, establishing what ran and how far it got, with written confirmation of what can continue before any payment. Where a subject cannot continue, that is said at the counselling stage.
A Levels run in Grades 11 and 12 with Cambridge certified teachers and university pathway support, and the honest caveat is the hour. The published senior slot falls around 05:30 Danish time in winter, so this works for a motivated student with a clear destination abroad and works badly otherwise. Have that conversation before Grade 11 rather than two months into it.
The difference is language and destination rather than quality. A folkeskole teaches in Danish, embeds a child in a local cohort and leads into Danish upper secondary. A British curriculum online school in Denmark teaches in English, follows the Cambridge syllabus and examination series, and leads outwards. A family staying should take the Danish route; a family leaving in three years usually should not.
That is the case it fits. US K-12 Common Core standards under Cognia accreditation, assessed continuously through the year, which transfers into an American school more readily than a Cambridge record does. Ask what documentation arrives at the end of Grade 12 and take it to the receiving district before you commit, because districts differ.
Denmark has no Indian-curriculum school anywhere, so the usual pattern is a board change on arrival and another on return. This removes both. NCERT textbooks and CBSE-pattern assessment run from Grade 1 to 12, with NIOS or BOSSE certifying Grades 10 and 12, and the registration arrangements from Denmark are settled with a counsellor well ahead.
Danish institutions assess foreign qualifications under their own admission rules, so the answer is institution by institution. One thing is general: Danish-language programmes carry a language requirement that an English-medium school does not meet, so a child aiming at one needs Danish built up separately over years, not months. Check requirements before Grade 11 subject selection.
A published 2:20 ratio, meaning a class teacher leading and an assistant subject teacher handling questions while the lesson continues. For a Danish family the useful by-product is evidential: being able to describe the staffing and show a demo recording makes the first supervision conversation considerably easier than describing self-paced study.
A single published figure per grade covering live classes, learning material, assessments, the platform with recordings and notes, and co-curricular sessions, with nothing added for technology. Outside it: the one-time board registration fee, NIOS registration and examination fees as an international student, Australian attestation and courier on physical books. Home education in Denmark attracts no municipal funding, so budget for the whole figure. Fees are non-refundable.
Two separate things, and families often do only the first. On our side: a device with a stable connection, an identity document or birth certificate and the previous school reports, and a counselling call. On yours: the written notification to your municipality before teaching begins. Enrolling here without notifying does not put the arrangement right.
There is, covering the city's international school market, local club life and what the capital's municipalities expect. The teaching, the pathways and the fee are identical wherever a child logs in from, so read this page for the legal framework and that one if you live in the capital.

It holds IAO and Cognia accreditation, Cambridge certification for IGCSE and A Level, and NIOS or BOSSE for the Indian pathways, none of which is a Danish approval and none of which is claimed to be. Danish authorities approve free schools and private schools; this is neither. The accreditations matter for the country your child applies from later.
They run in any month rather than following the August start, and compulsory education does not apply at this age, so no notification arises yet. Nursery begins at three with short activity-led sessions and an adult nearby in the first weeks.
Teaching is in English, so a child keeps pace in subjects while Danish is built separately. That separation needs planning rather than hoping, because the minimum subjects a municipality may test include Danish, and a primary-age child who has had no Danish teaching for two years will show it. Most families run a local Danish class alongside from the start.
Abroad is the direction it points: Cambridge A Levels, the Cognia-accredited American pathway or the Indian pathways, with university pathway support for applications. The senior-grade timetable is the obstacle in Denmark, falling very early in the local morning, so a family should decide whether that is sustainable before Grade 11 rather than discovering it in November.
Enrolment runs in any month, and so does the notification, since nothing in the Danish process is tied to August. Placement comes from the previous school's reports, the gap topics are listed, and recordings cover what was taught before joining. Tell your municipality when teaching actually starts.
There is no requirement to, although the municipality may still test in the minimum subjects as part of supervision. A student here works towards Cambridge, Cognia American, Australian, NIOS or BOSSE certification instead. If a Danish upper secondary place is in the plan, that institution's entry requirements should be checked well before Grade 9, because the two routes do not line up automatically.
Every timetabled period is taught live with attendance recorded, and recordings sit behind that for revision and absences. The distinction does real work in Denmark: at supervision, a log of attended live lessons with a named teacher describes itself, while a list of videos watched invites harder questions about how much teaching actually happened.
One batch slot, with the length per grade published before enrolment, typically finishing late morning in winter. Municipalities tend to ask about the overall shape of the week rather than screen hours alone, so it helps to be able to show taught hours, independent work and the activities that fill the rest of the day. Eye exercises run during class.
Through Danish association life more than through school, which is true of Danish children generally. Sports clubs, music schools and scouting are where the local cohort actually forms, and they run in the afternoons and evenings when this timetable is already finished. The class group provides twenty familiar classmates each day on top of that.
SEND trained educators work to an individualised plan covering dyslexia, ADHD, autism and speech, language and sensory processing needs, priced separately from the annual fee. Assessments from another country are read and used. The written plan is also the clearest way to show a municipality how teaching has been adapted for a particular child.
Class teacher first, then the academic coordinator, then a counsellor, and nothing clinical, because the school employs no psychologists and does not pretend otherwise. In Denmark a family also has local avenues through the municipality, and for a child struggling with isolation rather than schoolwork those are usually the more useful ones.
The dashboard and platform hold attendance for every live class, assignments, assessment results and the lesson recordings themselves, which between them evidence what was taught and when. Ask the counsellor what can be exported before your first visit. Keep your own teaching log and forward plan as well, since those two documents are what municipalities most often ask to see.
It follows its own published calendar, which will not match the Danish one, so expect teaching days during Danish breaks and breaks when Danish schools are open. Families take the weeks they want as planned absences with the recordings to catch up. Worth checking against your municipality's expectations on taught weeks per year.
The teaching is not yours to do, but the responsibility is. Grades 1 to 5 need an adult available for logins and focus, and from the middle grades a student manages the timetable alone. Danish rules keep the family accountable for the child's education overall, which is why the teaching log and the forward plan are yours to maintain rather than ours.
Where you are with your municipality, how long you expect to stay, which pathway that points to, and what the class times mean in Danish hours including the senior-grade problem. You also get the published fee for the grade and a clear statement of what this school does not cover, meaning Danish and the national subjects. A demo class can be booked in the same call.
