Copenhagen's international school places are concentrated and heavily subscribed, and a posting here often runs shorter than a school career. Parents weighing the best online schools in Copenhagen usually switch for five reasons.
International and bilingual places in Copenhagen cluster in a handful of schools and the queue does not adjust for when a family lands. Admission here does not depend on a vacancy, so a child who arrives in January is studying in January.
The afternoon batches land at roughly 09:00 to 11:30 Copenhagen time, an ordinary school morning, covering Nursery through Grade 9. The rest of the day belongs to the family, which in this city usually means a club, a sport or a Danish class.
Copenhagen holds a large share of households on fixed-term research, corporate and diplomatic postings. The enrolment belongs to the child rather than to a Danish address, so the curriculum, teachers and records continue into the next country without a new admission round.
A local school means learning in Danish from day one, which is right for a family staying and hard for a child arriving at thirteen for two years. Teaching here is in English throughout, and Danish is added locally at the family's own pace rather than as the condition for schooling at all.
The annual fee is published grade by grade before a family applies, rather than quoted after an enquiry. There is no admission deposit, building fee or capital levy, and no transport cost attached, which makes the comparison against a Copenhagen international place a single number.

Straight answers for international families in Copenhagen: what has to be registered with the municipality, how the class times fall locally, which curricula are offered, and what the fee covers.
One letter, before teaching starts. The family writes to the municipality naming which children will be taught, where, and by whom, and supervision follows from there. Denmark asks that children be taught rather than that they attend a school, which is why this route is open here and closed in Germany. Sunbeam World School is not a Danish school and cannot send that letter for you.
Not all of them. Danish is not taught here and the curriculum follows international rather than Danish learning goals, so the family covers Danish and the Danish-specific content separately, usually through a tutor or a municipal offer. In Copenhagen that is easier to arrange than almost anywhere in the country, but it has to be arranged before you notify rather than discovered at the first visit.
Copenhagen draws researchers, engineers and diplomats on fixed-term contracts, and their children often arrive at eleven or thirteen with three years left in the country. Starting those years in Danish is a hard ask. This is for that household, for one that landed outside the intake, and for a child who will sit final examinations somewhere else. A family staying for good should use the local system.
Nursery through Grade 9 land at roughly 09:00 to 11:30 local in winter, an hour later in summer, which leaves the whole afternoon free in a city where clubs and sport run from mid-afternoon onwards. Grades 10 to 12 are published only on a morning India slot that falls at about 05:30 here in winter, which is a genuine obstacle rather than an inconvenience. Check it before enrolling a senior student.
Six pathways: Cambridge, American, Australian, CBSE-aligned, NIOS and BOSSE. The International Baccalaureate, Edexcel and ICSE are not among them, and nor is the folkeskole curriculum. Several Copenhagen schools run the IB through to the diploma, so a family whose plan depends on it has good local options and should use them.
Cambridge IGCSE runs in Grades 6 to 10 and AS and A Levels in Grades 11 and 12, taught by Cambridge certified teachers and recognised in 135+ countries. For a Copenhagen household the recognition is the point: a child who starts IGCSE here and finishes it in Singapore or Dubai carries the same syllabus and the same examination series across the move.
This is the case Copenhagen families bring most often, because a mid-course arrival is exactly what local international schools struggle to take. A counsellor works from the previous school's reports, establishes which subjects ran and how far, and confirms in writing what can be continued before anything is paid. What cannot continue is named at that stage.
A Levels run in Grades 11 and 12 with Cambridge certified teachers and university pathway support for applications abroad. The obstacle in Copenhagen is the hour: the published senior slot falls around 05:30 local in winter. Families who make it work usually have a child already committed to a destination abroad and a household that can restructure around an early start. Settle that honestly before Grade 11.
A Copenhagen international school gives a child a physical cohort, a building to go to and a place in the city's international community, and charges for it. A British curriculum online school in Copenhagen gives the same Cambridge syllabus with no waiting list, no commute across the city and a school that leaves when the family does. The trade is community for continuity, and which matters more depends on how long you are staying.
Only if the destination is American. It runs on US K-12 Common Core standards under Cognia accreditation with continuous assessment, which is a poor match for a child who will apply through UCAS and a good one for a child heading to a US district or college. Ask what records are issued at the end of Grade 12 and test them against the receiving institution before committing.
Copenhagen has no Indian-curriculum school, so a family posted here normally changes board on arrival and changes back on return, losing ground twice. The CBSE-aligned pathway avoids both: NCERT textbooks and CBSE-pattern assessment from Grade 1 to 12, with NIOS or BOSSE certifying Grades 10 and 12 and arrangements from Denmark settled with a counsellor.
The fee page publishes a 2:20 ratio, a class teacher with an assistant subject teacher taking questions during the lesson. Danish classrooms are not large, so the number alone will not impress a parent here. What is worth watching in a demo class is whether a child who has just arrived in a new country and says nothing gets drawn in anyway.
One published figure per grade, covering live classes, learning material, assessments, the platform with recordings and notes, and co-curricular sessions, with no technology charge in the year. Separate: the one-time board registration fee, NIOS registration and examination fees as an international student, Australian pathway attestation and courier on physical books. Fees are non-refundable, and home education in Denmark carries no municipal funding, so the whole cost sits with the family.
Not through us, in this city. There is no hub or study centre here, so the social side comes from Copenhagen's association life, which is how Danish children meet each other anyway: a sports club, a music school, a scout group. A school day that ends before noon leaves more room for that than a Danish school day does, and it is also where the language starts to arrive.
There is, and it carries the detail on notification, supervision and what the municipality can test, which applies the same way in Aarhus or Aalborg as it does here. The teaching itself is identical wherever a child logs in from, so the country page is the one to read for the legal picture and this one for the city.

It holds IAO and Cognia accreditation, with Cambridge certifying IGCSE and A Level and NIOS or BOSSE the Indian pathways. None of it is a Danish approval. Worth knowing: at a supervision visit your municipality is interested in what your child is being taught and how well, not in who accredits the provider, so accreditation matters for the next country rather than for the tilsyn.
There is no list and no interview. Copenhagen families are used to queueing for places from an early age, and this works differently: a counselling call, a short form, and a start in whichever month suits. Nursery begins at three, below the age at which Danish compulsory education starts, with short activity-led sessions.
Teaching is in English from the first day, so an eight-year-old who arrives in October keeps pace in mathematics and science instead of waiting for the language. Live periods are short at this stage with breaks, and much of the work happens off the screen. Danish is added through a local class in the afternoons, which is also where the friendships come from.
It leads abroad rather than into the Danish system: Cambridge A Levels, the Cognia-accredited American pathway or the Indian pathways, with university pathway support. A family hoping to move a child into Danish upper secondary afterwards should check that institution's entry requirements early, since an English-medium international certificate is not the usual route in.
Starting mid-year is routine here and is often the whole reason a family calls, since arriving in November with children and no school place is a common Copenhagen story. Placement comes from the previous school's reports, gap topics are listed, and recordings cover what was taught before the join date.
Live, every timetabled period, with attendance recorded. For a Copenhagen family that record is worth more than convenience: a log of attended live lessons is what makes a supervision conversation straightforward, whereas self-paced video is harder to evidence. Recordings sit behind the live class for revision and absences.
One batch slot, ending before noon for most grades in winter, with the exact length per grade published beforehand. In a city with short winter daylight, finishing early means a child still gets outside in the light, which is not true of a Danish school day ending at two or three. Eye exercises run during class.
Nothing unusual. A laptop, tablet or smartphone and a stable connection, headphones and a webcam recommended rather than required, and no paid software beyond a browser and a PDF reader. Danish home broadband is well beyond what the platform needs, so the practical question is a quiet corner at class time.
The class group gives twenty familiar faces each day; Copenhagen gives the rest. Danish children meet each other through clubs rather than through classrooms, so a child in a local football or swimming club is meeting the neighbourhood on the same terms as everyone else, and the pre-noon finish leaves ample time for it.
SEND trained educators work to an individualised plan agreed with the family, covering dyslexia, ADHD, autism and speech, language and sensory processing needs, priced separately from the annual fee. Reports from a previous country are read and used. The written plan is also a useful document to have in hand when your municipality asks how the teaching is adapted.
Start with the class teacher, then the academic coordinator, then a counsellor. The school employs no clinical psychologists and says so, so anything clinical is arranged locally. A child who has just moved countries and lost a friendship group usually needs the local half of that more than the school half.
A parent app and portal update as work is marked. In households where both parents work full time, which in Copenhagen is most of them, that replaces waiting for a scheduled meeting to find out how things are going. The same records double as documentation of what has been taught if your municipality asks.
The school runs its own published calendar, so the autumn and winter breaks Danish schools take will not line up. Families who want those weeks free take them as planned absences and use the recordings, which matters most if older siblings are in a Danish school and the family wants to travel together.
Parents do not teach the timetabled lessons. Grades 1 to 5 need an adult available for logins and focus, and from the middle grades a student runs the timetable alone. Under Danish rules, though, the family remains responsible for the child's education as a whole, so the oversight role is real even when the teaching is not yours.
Whether you have notified your municipality yet, how long you expect to be in Denmark, which pathway that points to, and what the class times look like in Copenhagen hours including the senior-grade problem. The published fee for the grade comes with it, and a demo class can be booked in the same call.
