Deepawali - A Festival of Learning and Light

Deepawali – A Festival of Learning and Light

Table of Contents

DEEPAWALI— a festival that dates back more than 2,500 years!

The celebration of lights is particularly important to people worldwide. It represents the victory of light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, and good over evil.

Diwali offers an exceptional chance for Sunbeam World School’s online learning to promote cultural awareness and integrate worthwhile educational activities into the virtual classroom. We at Sunbeam World School firmly believe that the spirit of Diwali brings us together even though we may not physically share spaces. It serves as a reminder of the value of connection, progress, and enlightenment in education.

The word “Diwali” originates from the Sanskrit name “Deepavali.” When deconstructed, Deepavali translates as “row of clay lamps.” The lamps symbolise the inner light that keeps individuals safe from spiritual darkness.

The Legends of Diwali

Diwali has its roots in legend. It is a festival celebrated in northern India commemorating King Rama’s return from banishment.

—Diwali for God Rama—

The classic Hindu epic Ramayana tells this tale of Rama’s father, King Dasharatha, sending him into exile.

  • After leaving Ayodhya, Rama and his wife Sita spent fourteen years living in the forest!
  • An evil monarch by the name of Ravana abducted Sita during their exile.
  • Rama killed King Ravana to find and save Sita.
  • After that, Rama and Sita returned to their native land.

The news that the couple was returning made the people of Ayodhya so joyful that they lighted lamps all around the city and along the road to direct them home. They decorated the city and let off fireworks as well. It is said that this is where the Diwali customs originated.

—Diwali for God Krishna—

The Hindu god Krishna is celebrated in southern India for his victory over another evil ruler and for releasing 16,000 imprisoned ladies!

—Diwali for Goddess Lakshmi—

Additionally, Diwali is celebrated in Gujarat, a state in western India, as the day the goddess Lakshmi wed Lord Vishnu after emerging from the ocean. Nonetheless, she is among the gods worshipped on this day worldwide.

In honour of the goddess Lakshmi, oil lamps known as diyas are scattered throughout homes to light the way for her and bestow wealth and success upon the occupants.

Five Days of DEEPAWALI

1. Dhanteras

It is the official commencement of Diwali. On this day, people will purchase ornaments, new kitchenware, utensils, and clothing, particularly for Diwali. It’s regarded as a very lucky and successful day. Additionally, every house is meticulously cleaned on this day. On this day, Ayurveda, or the science of medicine, is thought to have sprung from the ocean thanks to Lord Dhanvantari.

2. Chhoti Diwali

On day two of Diwali, it is Chhoti Diwali. Chhoti is a diminutive of little. The day before Diwali is today. On this day, people exchange tiny presents and candies to rejoice. It’s a remnant of a bygone era when confections were revered as pure offerings to the gods. On this day, Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasur, releasing everyone from terror.

3. Lakshmi Puja

The main day of Diwali is the third day. To commemorate Lakshmi Puja, we wear the wonderful new garments we bought on the first day. Sparklers are ignited, and fireworks are set off. Visitors light candles in the temples and decorate their homes with diyas to welcome Lakshmi and celebrate abundance.

4. The New Year Era

“Happy New Year!” is the message of Saal Mubarak, the fourth day of Diwali. It’s a day of family and giving thanks for the people in your life, observed by some as the start of their new year.

5. Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj is the name of the fifth and last day of Diwali celebrations. The ties between brothers and sisters are the subject of this day. As brothers pledge to shield their sisters from all adversity, siblings rejoice in their familial bonds.
