Why Is Our Indian Education System Lagging Behind

Why Is Our Indian Education System Lagging Behind?

Table of Contents

Education is essential to an individual’s development and, by extension, the country’s development as a whole. Even though the Indian educational system has a long history of success, it has recently come under fire from around the globe, and it is undeniable that we have been lagging behind for several decades now.

Consequently, there remain bottlenecks in the process even though the literacy rate is increasing; to be precise, where are we going wrong?

The Problem in the Indian Education System:

Absence of Enthusiasm

Less than 10% of the curriculum is practical learning and student research, with 90% of the curriculum being theoretical. Students are constantly restricted to following a set curriculum and are not encouraged to venture outside their comfort zones. There is also no room for creative learning and thinking. Our teaching approach is extremely repetitive and lacking in flexibility and agility. Students are often forced to sit through lengthy lectures, the value of which is seriously questioned. During these periods, engaging pupils in the material benefits them academically and piques their curiosity to explore the subject in new ways.

All work and no play

In the Indian educational system, year-end results and board exams are extremely important, and students who receive low grades may experience mental abuse, humiliation, and a loss of confidence. Extracurricular activities such as sports, arts and crafts, and other hobbies are not highly valued by the public, parents, or institutions. Academic courses are prioritized to such an extent that education frequently uses the time allocated for extracurricular activities, such as sports, to complete their own curriculum. Here, a fundamental comprehension of the learning process is required. Learning is a creative process, and a person must assimilate the information and think, act, and react in ways that combine their creativity and practical knowledge.

Lack of Individuality

Empowering people with knowledge and skills to attain their desired levels of success in life is the aim of education. Not every child aspires to work as a rocket scientist when they grow up; some may prefer to be poets, singers, athletes, or public speakers. The problem with India’s current educational system is that, even though many of the subjects being taught would be irrelevant to them in a few years, all of these kids will have to study the same subjects and follow the same educational methodology. Basic literacy is obviously important, but forcing students to study the same courses for ten long years before they can choose.

Blending creativity and learning

Our system needs to modify what Constitutes “ Good subjects “. Though we have led the way in science and mathematics, we can still achieve more. Other literacy and special topics must receive the same amount of attention. A curriculum shift that includes creative courses in addition to math and science will make for a terrific combination and help students grasp the wider picture early on rather than discover their true interests in later life.

Teaching methodology

While teachers and teaching techniques need to be completely revamped, the syllabus is one area that needs to change. The way we teach is out of date. The only instructional tools we still use are the chalkboard and blackboard. Although there has been a slight towards e-learning, it has only occurred in a very modest amount. Our teachers are as ineffective as our instructional methodology. The school needs to take steps to upskill them in more modern teaching techniques and to help them adjust to agile e-learning. E-learning can be innovative, but only when combined with a qualified tutor. If we can unite an excellent teacher with a fantastic agile.
